Our Approach

We believe that effective physiotherapy goes beyond simply treating symptoms.

Every person we work with is different, and treatment should reflect that. Our approach combines:

  • Thorough assessment
  • Hands-on physiotherapy where appropriate
  • Exercise-based rehabilitation
  • Education to help you understand your injury and recovery

By understanding why a problem has developed, we can create a plan that not only reduces pain but helps prevent it from returning.

Our Services

Exercise, Rehabilitation and Education

Exercise plays a central role in long-term recovery. Through structured rehabilitation, we help patients build strength, improve movement, and regain confidence in their bodies.

Education is equally important. Many people worry that movement will make their injury worse, when in reality the right type of movement is often key to recovery. We take time to explain what’s going on and why specific exercises or strategies are being used.

This approach is particularly valuable for active individuals and athletes, where managing training load and recovery is essential.

Our Clinic

The Physio Room Wetherby is based within 5 Star Fitness on Crossley Street. Being located in a well-equipped gym environment allows us to integrate rehabilitation and exercise seamlessly into treatment, without being limited by space or equipment.

This setting supports a more complete approach to recovery, particularly for those returning to sport, training, or higher levels of activity.

Meet The Physio

Neil Smitherman.

I qualified as a physiotherapist at Leeds Beckett University. In addition to my physiotherapy degree, I hold two further degrees in Sports Science and a Master’s degree in Strength and Conditioning.

I have worked with a wide range of people, from elite rugby league athletes and endurance runners to individuals with chronic back pain and everyday musculoskeletal issues. My approach is evidence-based and focused on helping patients achieve meaningful, long-term improvements.

Alongside clinical practice, I am also a lecturer at Leeds Beckett University.

Meet The Physio

Rhys Burton

I’m Rhys , a Chartered Physiotherapist working in elite sport with Leeds United Academy and the FA, alongside my clinical role at The Physio Room Wetherby.

Since entering football in 2019, I’ve developed a particular passion for lower‑limb injuries and long‑term rehabilitation planning, especially for post‑operative athletes. My approach blends structured, progressive rehab with hands‑on treatment to support players through every stage of recovery.

Before specialising in football, I worked within the NHS, treating a wide spectrum of patients — from spinal pain to individuals recovering from joint replacements. This foundation has shaped my ability to adapt treatment to people of all ages and abilities.

My work in academy football has given me extensive experience with developing athletes, and I understand the unique physical demands placed on young players as they grow, train, and compete.

Outside the clinic, you’ll usually find me watching football or rugby. I grew up competing in the 200m and 400m while playing rugby union throughout my youth, and I still love being in the stands for any sport I can get tickets to.
